The Victim Assistance Team (VAT) consists of 1 Coordinator and 12 volunteers. The primary purpose of Victim Services is to assist individuals affected by crime and crisis circumstances in an effort to reduce the impact of trauma and enhance the ability for individuals to rebuild their lives. VAT provides assistance with victims exercising their constitutional and/or statutory rights, establishing/maintaining personal safety, completion of Crime Victims Compensation applications, referrals to community agencies, educational and emotional support throughout the criminal justice process, and ensuring continuity of services between agencies. The Sheriff’s Office Victim Assistance Team further fulfills these responsibilities for all the law enforcement agencies in the county to include the Texas Department of Public Safety. VAT members are assigned rotating shifts of on-call coverage to ensure on-scene field response 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
Each year during the holiday season VAT hosts the Tree of Angels Program, honoring victims of violent crimes and their families.
A Chaplain Program was created as part of the Employee Assistance Program. There are 6 Chaplains from the Bastrop area, that fellowship with employees; they also offer the prayers at Commissioners Court.
